Top 10 Virtual Escape Rooms for Online Teambuilding in 2021
This is our list of the best virtual team escape rooms for online team building in 2021!
What are virtual escape rooms for teambuilding?
In case you’ve never done a virtual escape room or even a real-life escape room, a virtual escape room is a room you have to escape with a group of people – your colleagues, friends or family – in an online web-based program or app which you can access with your computer, tablet or phone conducted through a conferencing platform such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex or other and usually led by a host.
The objective of an escape room is always to escape the room as fast as possible whether against other teams, yourself or against a time limit. To escape the room teams must solve challenging puzzles, riddles and conundrums which require teamwork, collaboration, communication and leadership skills.
Virtual escape rooms are a real fun team bonding experience that can be done while being apart and are therefore a great way to bringing team members closer together, especially during a time of lockdown, social distancing and remote work.
What are the different types of virtual escape rooms?
You can find countless escape rooms online with a great variety of gameplay and themes.
Many of the so-called virtual escape rooms are only text based which are basically a series of questions or riddles at most and often cause for disappointment especially for those who have already experienced real-life escape rooms.
The more advanced escape rooms will have you go through different web pages and ‘rooms’ with a different puzzle to solve in each room to finally escape the last room. Some might enjoy these types of rooms the most. An example of this type of room is the Egyptian – Escape the Pyramid.
The best and most advanced type of virtual escape rooms are those that have you actually look through a virtual 360 room whereby you see the whole room with all the items and evidence you need to escape it. An example of this type of room is Sherlock Holmes.
How to choose a virtual escape room?
The biggest point to consider when choosing a virtual escape room is the type of game play as described above. The most advanced rooms will have a virtual 360 gameplay which will give for a real-life feel as if you’re actually in the room. Others might prefer a room whereby you go from one web page to another.
Whatever your preference is, always make sure you know what you buy by reading reviews or requesting a demonstration, the best companies that offer virtual escape rooms will also give you a demonstration if you ask them.

How to Collaborate Better in Virtual Games
How to Collaborate Better in Virtual Games
Looking for some ideas to beat that next virtual game with your colleagues effectively?
Being game developers and online team building facilitators, we always look for ways to challenge teams to collaborate more during online games to improve team bonding and individual participation within a group and strengthen teamwork towards reaching a common goal.
So what are some of the best ways to collaborate as a team in a virtual setting?
Here is how your team can collaborate better in your next online team building activity!
Assign Roles
The key to effective collaboration in any team is having the right people in the right place so assign some basic roles within your team. The roles you need to complete a game effectively might differ per type of game but generally it is a good idea to assign a leader who delegates the tasks, a note taker, an information gatherer, and someone to share the game screen so everyone has a point of reference, other useful roles can be a time-keeper and a researcher.
Share Screen
For all our virtual activities we recommend one person in the team to share their screen with the rest so there’s one point of reference while everyone else in the team also has the game open on their own computer and the team as a whole can explore multiple parts of the game at the same time.
Determine the Objective
All to often teams get stuck or lost in the information given in a game without first figuring out what the actual objective is. In our Virtual Amazing Race for example we specifically mention what the challenge is but there’s always teams that read over it or get lost in the virtual scenes. Once you can define a problem or objective you will know much better what to look for within all the information given and to separate what you need and what you don’t need.
Delegate Tasks
With limited time at hand during these games and often multiple tasks to complete, it is important to split up the work so you can work on multiple tasks at the same time and complete the game faster. In our Virtual Amazing Race for example, the leader could assign one person to look around the 3D scenes while another person reads all the text, and a third person tries to complete the location challenge.
Specific Collaboration Tools
Some specific tools for collaboration that are useful in tackling virtual games are taking notes and screenshots and sharing them in the chat of the conference platform you’re using during the game like Zoom or Microsoft Teams or through a shared folder like Microsoft Sharepoint with OneDrive or Google Docs. You can also use external chats like Slack. Another useful tool is a whiteboard which is available in MS Teams or use one of the external apps like MIRO.
In our Virtual Escape rooms for example it is very useful to have the information gatherer take screenshots of all the information in the room and paste those screen shots in the chat, so everyone has them at hand at any time to solve the puzzles easier.
Final Advice
Some final advice is an obvious one but often neglected. As virtual team building facilitators, we always move between breakout rooms to see how teams are doing and help where needed and what we often see are teams that either don’t talk or talk so much and over each other that important information or even straight up solutions are missed, especially when teams are under time pressure. So, keep the communication going and keep listening to each other!
We hope this post will help you and your team on your next online team activity, good luck and have fun!

ASML The Netherlands
ASML The Netherlands
ASML The Netherlands came to us through our Dutch teambuilding partner teamfilm.nl and was looking for an involving virtual team activity to conduct for their international team of 75 delegates during a 2 hour online Zoom session on 18 December 2020.
The objective for the event was to give participants a fun online experience as a reward for their hard work throughout 2020 and to celebrate Christmas together with colleagues in a virtual remote setting as the lockdown due to Covid was still in place.
ASML selected two activities for their event; the Virtual Escape for half the group at random and the Virtual Amazing Race for the other half. After some fun warm-up games and a short briefing for the event, participants went off to their teams breakout rooms to engage in a race to various places around the world starting in Singapore airport. Furthermore the locations for this race included places like Hanoi, Dublin, Rio, Hong Kong and finish in Washington.
The highlights of the race were the two live challenges with a yoga session in Rishikesh, India and a cooking challenge in Bangkok, Thailand. After roughly 1.5 hour of fun packed virtual travelling and games, participants came back to the main Zoom call for the debrief, where the top three teams were announced and the winners awarded during a virtual ceremony. The event was wrapped up with a group photo and lots of laughter!
One of the participants said after the event: “It was fantastic!”
